Substance?

Guys, I think I’m getting the hang of this Spanish keyboard.. or maybe it’s just a European one.

Ok so I finally have some time to write things of substance.  First topic— traveling to Spain!  Did I ever tell you guys I dislike sitting down for long periods of time?  I think those that hang out with me enough—or at least at a bar once or twice, can infer that sometimes I just stand up while everyone else is sitting down.  Anyway, just in case you did not know this, I do not enjoy sitting down for a long while.  I like standing up or lying down, not the in between.  Basically I hate engaging my back muscles.

Back to my point— so you can imagine how unpleasant this was for me and all, 10 hours sitting down.  Also I have this thing about public bathrooms, I pretty much loathe them.  So I was uncomfortable, dehydrated because I hate using public bathrooms— more importantly airplane bathrooms, and had to argue with myself if I should get up and go or wait another half an hour.  I’m pretty sure I didn’t get any sleep either, I still need that massage that I’ve been needing since the week before finals week guys, ya’ll need to get on that!

Ten hours on this flight.. I get off the plane, long waiting times.. until I finally get out of that damn airport and see this place that I got into debt for.. and it looks like Texas!!  It’s comforting though, not going to lie.  The grass is dead, and it’s sunny.  The difference, you wonder?  Is that the weeds are prettier, they’re colourful wild flowers and it’s windy and hey.. the accents are a little different.  I like it though.  The city is pretty busy, it reminds me of Dallas.  Sorta.  Just more cramped.  It’s so modern here, I was surprised.  I imagined something more.. Provincial.  Not the third world kind, just something more quaint.  I like it, I just don’t feel so culture shocked.

Speaking of culture shock, out of our group of about.. sesenta (70) mas or menos, one girl got straight on a flight back to the US after not even spending 24 hours here.  Ridiculous.  It’s not that intimidating.. I guess some people just cannot hack it.. although I do not quite understand why!  You gotta be open minded about things, you open your mind you open your heart to some amazing experiences and people.  I realize not everything is for everyone, but you have to give it a chance at first!  Maybe this girl’s window for a chance is an 10 hours.. who knows.  She’s missing out though.  Sucks for her.

So now onto my roommate.  She was the first girl who talked to me when I got off the plane, she had asked me if I was with the group of students, and I said yes.  Afterward I had noticed her American Eagle Outfitters’ flip flops and commented on them because I had the same pair, in a different color.  That was the extent of our conversation, but even on the bus to the school I sat in front of her and when we were waiting to get picked up to be taken to our host families we were near each other.  I kept making faces through the day, at the people who were in charge who seemed a bit unorganized, and she would notice and smirk.  So while we were waiting for our ride, she offered me a snack and we exchanged names.. I asked her who her host family was, and she said the first name.. then I stopped her and said, ‘You’re with me!’  And that is the start of our lovely friendship, she has pretty awesome initials too.  LW*, which means she knows that during roll you don’t have to pay attention until a few minutes into it.   I lucked out with the roommate.  We share one apartment with a host mom, and two other girls from the school.  We’re also expecting two more girls within the next couple of weeks from a different school.

Six girls, one bathroom.. stick around for that saga.

And coming up.. how I caught my hair on fire in a department store (El Corté Inglés) and how my awesome roommate saved me.  Still hoping to upload pictures.. don’t worry I’m on it!!

Miss you**

* For all intents and purposes, you can still think of my initials as LB.

** except those I called that decided not to pick up.  Jerks.
